Doctor Information

A doctor of medicine, medical doctor, or simply doctor, practices the profession of medicine, which is concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease or injury. This properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines, such as anatomy and physiology, as well as the underlying diseases and their treatment.

The ethics of medicine require that doctors show consideration, compassion and benevolence for their patients. They not only complete a minimum of eight years of post-secondary education, but they must be board certified and take an oath regarding their ethics. One such oath is the Oath of Maimonides.

After graduation, medical practitioners often undertake further training in a particular field, to become a medical specialist. This is often referred to as residency training. This further training typically takes from three to six years, but can be longer depending on specialty and jurisdiction. Primary care is increasingly recognized as a specialty, and residency programs in this field are becoming common.
